Some new work

What a crazy hiatus, sorry for the lack of posting.
Here's two UDK scenes I've worked on this semester so far, on top of an illustration and game projects class. I've been directing the environment art for an awesome team of about 14 people while supervising another indie game. I'm so excited to show some finished products by the time Spring rolls around.

Small Update

Here's a few things I've been working on. The last two paintings are just from this week. But, my video shows some progress I've made on a Save Room design for a small independent game I'm working on. I've done all the GUI coding, texture painting, and modelling for this scene. The character was made and animated as a prototype by my friend and co-worker, Chase Holton.

Finals Friday

July 5th! Celebrated my freedom yesterday by relaxing. Celebrating my freedom today by creating. Here's some finished stuff I completed in the last week.

Drum Set renders, two normal, one not so normal. I love the idea of trying out abstract things in a program meant to be hyper real, so I spent some time making a few other materials and trying out something pretty neat. I modeled, textured, lit, and rendered everything.

About a 6 hour speed-vector portrait of Michael C. Hall in anticipation for the Dexter final season.

Finished my Space Cats drawing, which turned out to be more of an exercise in pen tool process. Still, I enjoy the concept a lot. Darth Dog is my favorite.

Side note of what I learned this past week: "It's 90% what you draw and 10% how you draw it" - Andrew Loomis. The Space Cats illustration took significantly longer than my Dexter portrait, but I feel as though I enjoy the Dexter portrait more. Maybe because I didn't have to look at it for long, but most likely because it was an idea I let sit in my head and build up for a while before acting on it.

WIP Wednesday #2

Sweet! I've made just about as much progress as I hoped for. 2 if not all the projects will be done by next Wednesday. The drums are even set up with a bunch of set driven keys to make adjusting the cymbal legs a piece of cake. My goal after texturing is to do one realistic render and one stylized render.

So, with Space Cats, I'm roughing out some values in photoshop, which I'm going to retrace with the pen tool. I'm really excited to get this in Unity to have some parallax movement happening along with a star particle system I made that'll help sell this background. A little story shinfo: Luke Catwalker is on a mission to stop Darth Dog and his evil empire by destroying the Death Ball (If you're getting heated, I'm purposely making this a parody). It is Luke's mission to also protect Princess PurrrrLeia (Purrrncess Leia??) and C3CAT as he battles against Mouse Fighters and Fish Wings.

Finally, back to Bill. This was mostly an exercise to quickly get the face down in ZBrush with just starting from a dynamesh ball. I thought it might be cool to caricature-ize him a bit (pull out those square head features of his) and make him a little bobble head! Maybe, we'll see.

WIP Wedenesdays

So, I decided to start a WIP Wednesday for a few reasons, but mainly self motivation at documentation of my process. I have 5 projects in motion at the moment, but there's only 3 I can show at the moment.
My goal is to bring what I show you every week to completion by the third week of showing it at the latest.

Here's some drum kit modeling that I'm going to bring to a full high quality render and detailed game object:

Game Art 1 Final

My first scene in UDK! "The Escape"
I'm very proud of this (for now), I modelled, posed, lit, textured, and near everything except for UDK's default smoke particles on the torches.
The idea for this scene was inspired by Polycount's Escape competition.

Process:

Initial concepts & shot idea

Pig redesigned into boar

High Poly ZBrush Models

Imported polypainted models into UDK after Retopology with NEX Tools

From then on I adjusted my composition, lit the scene into a night scene, and painted specular maps for the final shot at the top. And I had a ton of fun.
